Wading in Cultural Waters Part One: Why Engagement and Reconciliation Matter is an interactive workshop designed to help participants better understand the historical and contemporary realities that shape relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, while also exploring why meaningful Indigenous Engagement and Reconciliation matter to organizations today.
Rather than approaching reconciliation as a checklist, compliance exercise, or single organizational initiative, this workshop encourages participants to examine why Engagement and Reconciliation matter, what has created the need for them, and how stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities can benefit an organization.
Through facilitated discussion, reflection, shared learning, and practical examples, participants explore the historic continuing impacts of policies and systems, and the importance of understanding Indigenous perspectives. We also examine the role that relationships, respect, reciprocity, trust, and accountability play in meaningful Engagement and Reconciliation.
The workshop considers the organizational case for taking this work seriously. Participants examine how stronger Indigenous relationships and greater cultural understanding can contribute to areas such as recruitment and retention, workplace culture, customer and community relationships, procurement and business development, reputation, partnership opportunities, innovation, and long-term organizational resilience.
A central theme of the workshop is that meaningful Engagement and Reconciliation should be something an organization does with Indigenous peoples creating reciprocal value. When approached respectfully and authentically, it can strengthen relationships, broaden perspectives, improve organizational decision-making, open new opportunities, and help organizations become more responsive to the communities and markets in which they operate.
The workshop creates space for participants to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and consider how their own experiences, workplaces, and organizations fit within the broader journey of Engagement and Reconciliation. Participants are encouraged to move beyond awareness toward a deeper understanding of how historical knowledge, contemporary realities, and relationship building can inform better decisions and more meaningful action.
